Oando PLC has confirmed it is collaborating with Nigerian authorities to investigate a series of coordinated attacks on its gas pipelines in Bayelsa State. The company reported that the 24-inch Ogboinbiri/Obiobi gas pipeline, located between Angiama and Angiamagbene in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, was targeted in three separate incidents on April 3, 2025. This pipeline is a critical conduit supplying gas to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) export terminal in Bonny, Rivers State.
In response to the attacks, Oando has shut down the affected pipeline to prevent further environmental damage and facilitate a thorough investigation. The company has activated its emergency response protocols, deployed leak repair teams, and is working closely with relevant authorities to conduct a Joint Investigation Visit (JIV). This statutory process involves regulators, the operating company, and host communities to ascertain the cause, volume, and impact of the leak.
The Bayelsa State Government has condemned the vandalism, describing it as “criminal damage and economic sabotage.” Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, emphasized the environmental and economic repercussions of such acts and urged local communities to assist in safeguarding national assets.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, visited the damaged site and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. He highlighted the significant revenue losses incurred daily due to the pipeline’s shutdown and reminded host communities of their 3% stake in oil operations under the Petroleum Industry Act, urging them to actively protect oil infrastructure.
