Nigeria’s aviation sector is bracing for significant disruptions as workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) commence an indefinite strike starting today, October 21, 2025. The industrial action, declared by aviation unions, stems from unresolved issues including poor wages and the non-implementation of the agency’s Conditions of Service (CoS).
NiMet plays a critical role in aviation safety by providing real-time weather forecasts, meteorological briefings, and data essential for flight operations. With services now suspended, airlines, pilots, airports, and air traffic controllers may face operational challenges nationwide.
A notice titled “Non-Implementation of Agreement – Withdrawal of Services” was issued to all NiMet workers on October 17, 2025, following repeated appeals to management. Aviation unions warn that allied professional bodies, including air traffic controllers, may join the strike in solidarity, potentially escalating the impact.
This marks the second major strike by NiMet workers in 2025, with the previous action in April having already disrupted flight operations across the country.
