The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has revealed that Nigerians living abroad collectively remitted a staggering N60 billion during December 2024. This announcement highlights the significant role of the diaspora community in supporting the Nigerian economy, particularly during the festive season.
Chairman of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended the contributions of Nigerians abroad, emphasizing that these remittances have become a vital source of foreign exchange for the nation. She added that these funds often go towards supporting families, businesses, and charitable projects back home.
Analysts noted that the figure demonstrates the resilience of the Nigerian diaspora amidst global economic uncertainties. With Nigeria being one of the largest recipients of remittances in Africa, these contributions play a crucial role in alleviating poverty and boosting the nation’s GDP.
The December 2024 remittances saw an increase compared to previous months, attributed to the festive season, where Nigerians abroad traditionally send funds to celebrate with their families.
