Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma following urgent abdominal surgery, according to reports. The Nigeria international was rushed to the hospital on Monday, May 13, after suffering a serious injury during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City in the Premier League.

Awoniyi collided with a post while attempting to score in the closing minutes of the match. Despite receiving medical attention, he continued playing as Forest had used all their substitutes. The extent of his injury was discovered the following day, leading to immediate surgery.

Nottingham Forest confirmed that Awoniyi is recovering well, but the club’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, was visibly frustrated that Awoniyi continued playing despite his injury. Marinakis was seen in a heated exchange with manager Nuno Espirito Santo after the match, with the club later stating that his reaction stemmed from deep concern for the player’s well-being.

The induced coma is reportedly a precautionary measure to restrict movement and regulate his heart rate, ensuring a smoother recovery.
