Dr. Ikenna C. Erinne, a 36-year-old Nigerian-born cardiologist residing in the United States, reportedly died by suicide on January 26, 2025, following a court ruling that mandated him to pay $15,000 monthly in child support to his ex-wife.

Originally from Anambra State, Dr. Erinne had been engaged in a prolonged and contentious divorce and custody battle. The court’s decision, which favored his ex-wife, imposed a significant financial burden, leading to severe emotional distress.

In a social media post, Nigerian-American Clayton Udo highlighted the challenges African men face in the U.S. legal system, referencing Dr. Erinne’s case as a tragic example of systemic issues that disproportionately affect them.

Further details emerged from Dr. Erinne’s father-in-law, Francis Van-Lare, who alleged that after losing the custody case, Dr. Erinne held his estranged partner and their children at gunpoint for three hours. The situation escalated until the nanny escaped and alerted authorities. Upon the arrival of the police, Dr. Erinne reportedly took his own life.

Dr. Erinne’s obituary describes him as a compassionate and dedicated cardiologist who made significant contributions to his community. He is survived by his children, family, and colleagues who mourn his untimely passing.

This incident underscores the critical importance of mental health awareness and support, especially for individuals facing legal and financial challenges. Community leaders and mental health professionals are advocating for accessible resources to assist those in distress, aiming to prevent such tragedies in the future.
