The Federal Government has announced plans to upgrade prison facilities across the country following President Bola Tinubu’s approval for the relocation of 29 correctional centres. The decision is aimed at improving security, decongesting overcrowded prisons, and modernizing correctional services to align with global standards.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed that many existing prison facilities are overcrowded, outdated, and located in densely populated areas, posing security risks. The relocation plan will move these correctional centres to more secure and strategically planned locations, ensuring better management and rehabilitation of inmates.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader prison reform agenda, which includes improved infrastructure, better welfare for inmates and officers, and the introduction of modern technology in correctional facilities. Authorities also plan to enhance vocational training programs within prisons to support inmate rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
Security concerns have been a key factor in the relocation decision, especially following previous jailbreaks and prison attacks in recent years. The new locations will be equipped with advanced security features to prevent breaches and improve overall prison management.
With this move, the government aims to create a more efficient and humane correctional system that balances security, rehabilitation, and the welfare of inmates. The relocation and upgrade process is expected to be carried out in phases, with input from relevant stakeholders in the justice sector.
