Nigeria to Set Up Gene Bank to Protect Indigenous Livestock Breeds.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to establish a gene bank aimed at preserving the country’s indigenous livestock breeds. This initiative is designed to protect and maintain Nigeria’s rich genetic diversity in animal agriculture, ensuring that native breeds are not lost due to crossbreeding, climate change, or declining population numbers.

Speaking on the project, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security emphasized that the gene bank will serve as a repository for genetic materials such as semen, embryos, and DNA samples from native livestock species. The goal is to maintain the unique traits of indigenous breeds, many of which are well-adapted to Nigeria’s environmental conditions and hold economic and cultural significance.

The initiative comes in response to concerns about the increasing reliance on imported livestock breeds, which, while often high-yielding, may not be as resilient to local climate challenges and diseases. Experts believe that preserving indigenous breeds could enhance food security and provide farmers with more sustainable livestock options that require fewer resources to maintain.

Nigeria’s indigenous livestock, including Red Sokoto goats, Kuri cattle, and West African Dwarf sheep, are valued for their adaptability and disease resistance. The gene bank will enable researchers and farmers to access preserved genetic material, allowing for selective breeding programs that improve productivity without losing the animals’ natural resilience.

With this initiative, the government aims to safeguard Nigeria’s livestock biodiversity for future generations. The project is expected to involve collaborations with research institutions, universities, and international agricultural organizations to ensure the successful preservation and sustainable use of indigenous livestock breeds.
