Luvsannamsrai Oyun-Erdene, the Prime Minister of Mongolia, has resigned following widespread protests over his son’s extravagant lifestyle. His resignation came on June 3, 2025, after losing a vote of confidence in parliament, triggered by public outrage over viral images of his son’s opulent spending.
The demonstrations in Ulaanbaatar had been ongoing since May, after one particular image showed the prime minister’s son proposing to his girlfriend at a luxury resort booked exclusively for the occasion. Protesters, angered by the display of wealth, demanded Oyun-Erdene’s resignation and called for a full disclosure of his personal finances.
Following the vote, Oyun-Erdene stated that serving Mongolia during challenging times had been an honor. Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh had earlier urged parliament to listen to the public’s demand for justice. As a result, Oyun-Erdene will serve in a caretaker role until a new prime minister is appointed within 30 days.
His resignation has fueled discussions on political accountability, leadership, and the influence of public opinion in governance. With Mongolia now facing a political transition, the spotlight remains on its leadership and how it responds to growing public scrutiny.
