A container-laden truck caused a major traffic disruption on Tuesday evening after crashing into the height restriction barrier at the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge in Lagos. The truck, carrying a 40-foot container, struck the barrier while attempting to ascend the bridge from the Admiralty Road axis. The steel barrier became lodged between the container and the truck’s cabin, rendering the vehicle immobile and blocking traffic flow.
The incident triggered a severe gridlock in the Lekki and Ikoyi areas, affecting thousands of commuters during peak travel hours. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) were swiftly deployed to the scene to manage traffic and begin clearing the obstruction.
In response to the accident, the Lagos State Government issued a travel advisory, urging motorists to avoid the Lekki-Ikoyi corridor and instead use alternative routes, including the Lekki Phase 1 tollgate and Falomo Bridge. Efforts to remove the truck and repair the damaged barrier were ongoing as of Wednesday morning.
Authorities have also reiterated the importance of enforcing vehicle height limits on restricted routes. Motorists are advised to remain patient and comply with directives from traffic officials as cleanup operations continue. The incident has renewed calls for stricter monitoring of container-laden trucks navigating urban roads in Lagos.
