Lateef Adedimeji, wife win ‘Best Indigenous Movie’ with “Lisabi: The Uprising”.

Lateef Adedimeji and his wife, Oyebade Adebimpe Adedimeji, have garnered significant acclaim for their work on the historical epic Lisabi: The Uprising. While the film received multiple nominations at the 2025 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), including Best Indigenous Language Movie (West Africa), Best Overall Movie, and Best Lead Actor for Lateef Adedimeji, the winners have not been officially announced yet. 

Lisabi: The Uprising is a 2024 Nigerian historical drama directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, with a screenplay co-written by Akinmolayan and Yinka Olaoye. The film was produced by Oyebade Adebimpe Adedimeji and Victoria Akujobi, with Lateef Adedimeji serving as executive producer. It portrays the 18th-century resistance led by Lisabi Agbongbo-Akala against the oppressive Oyo Empire, highlighting themes of unity, resilience, and the struggle for freedom. 

Upon its release on Netflix on September 27, 2024, the film quickly climbed to the number one spot on Netflix Nigeria’s chart within three days. It was also recognized as one of the most-searched Nigerian films of 2024. 

The sequel, Lisabi: A Legend Is Born, premiered on Netflix on January 10, 2025, continuing the narrative of the Egba people’s fight for independence. 

While the AMVCA awards are pending, the film’s impact on Nigerian cinema and its celebration of Yoruba heritage have been widely acknowledged.
