The Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos State has officially renamed the popular Charly Boy Bus Stop to Olamide Baddo Bus Stop in recognition of rap star Olamide Adedeji, widely known as Baddo. The decision honors Olamide’s cultural impact and his roots in Bariga, where he began his rise to fame. However, the move has sparked mixed reactions. Human rights lawyer Femi Falana criticized the renaming of public landmarks without community input, calling it unconstitutional and authoritarian. Many Lagosians have expressed concern over the erasure of Charly Boy’s legacy, a veteran entertainer and activist. Despite the official change, residents say the original name may persist in everyday use. The renaming is part of a broader initiative by the LCDA to honor notable Nigerians, including King Sunny Ade, 9ice, Tony Tetuila, and Bukayo Saka. The debate reflects a growing tension between honoring contemporary icons and preserving historical identities.
