The Lagos State Fresh Food Agro-Hub has recorded an impressive revenue of N2.495 billion in its first year of operation, according to a statement released by the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture. The hub, established to enhance the distribution of fresh agricultural produce, has significantly boosted the state’s economy and improved the livelihoods of farmers.
The agro-hub serves as a centralized marketplace, connecting local farmers directly to buyers, including wholesalers and retailers. This initiative has reduced post-harvest losses and ensured better pricing for farmers. The hub also promotes the availability of fresh produce to consumers, reducing dependence on imported agricultural products.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hailed the success of the agro-hub as a testament to the state’s commitment to diversifying its economy through agriculture. He noted that the hub has created employment opportunities, fostered local food production, and contributed to food security in Lagos. Plans are already in motion to replicate the model in other parts of the state.
Farmers and stakeholders have applauded the initiative, citing increased earnings and a more efficient supply chain as key benefits. By providing storage facilities, quality control measures, and access to a broader market, the agro-hub has addressed critical challenges faced by local farmers.
The Lagos State government aims to scale up the project to sustain its economic impact and further enhance food production. The success of the agro-hub highlights the potential of agriculture as a driver of economic growth and underscores the importance of investing in infrastructure that supports local farming communities.
