Lagos Confirms 14 Diphtheria Cases at King’s College, One Dead.

The Lagos State Government has confirmed an outbreak of diphtheria at King’s College Annex, Victoria Island, resulting in 14 cases among students and one reported death. 

In response, health officials, including the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, inspected the school’s facilities to assess hygiene standards and implement preventive measures. A mass vaccination campaign targeting students and staff has commenced, with parental consent required for student participation. 

The school’s principal, Mogaji Zakaria, reported that affected students are receiving treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and are in stable condition. Enhanced sanitation measures have been implemented, including mandatory mask-wearing and improved cleanliness protocols. 

The House of Representatives has called for compensation for the family of the deceased student and urged the Federal Ministry of Education to strengthen health and safety protocols in federal unity colleges. 

Diphtheria is a bacterial infection affecting the respiratory tract and can cause severe complications if untreated. The Lagos State Government advises residents to remain vigilant for symptoms such as sore throat, fever, and swollen neck glands, and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms arise.
