A Lagos-based National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, has reported receiving threats following a viral video in which she criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration. In the video posted on her TikTok account (@talktoraye), Uguamaye expressed frustration over escalating living costs, describing Tinubu as a “terrible leader” and questioning the government’s efforts to alleviate citizens’ suffering.
Following the video’s circulation, Uguamaye claimed that NYSC officials contacted her, pressuring her to remove the content. She expressed concerns for her safety, stating, “Dear Nigerians, they have my address. In case you guys don’t see me online, please you know who to hold accountable.”
The situation has garnered significant attention, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressing support for Uguamaye. He praised her courage and compared her to historic female activists in Nigeria, urging that she be met with encouragement rather than hostility.
Amnesty International has also condemned the alleged threats against Uguamaye, emphasizing her right to peacefully express discontent. The organization called on authorities to address the country’s economic challenges instead of intimidating citizens who voice their concerns.
As of now, there has been no official response from the NYSC or the federal government regarding the allegations made by Uguamaye.
