Lagos Reaffirms Ban on Flogging in Schools, Promotes Counseling Instead.

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its prohibition of corporal punishment in public schools, emphasizing counseling as the preferred method for addressing student misconduct. According to the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, flogging students for indiscipline remains strictly prohibited to prevent potential injuries or more severe consequences.

Alli-Balogun highlighted that alternative corrective measures, such as counseling, are more effective in shaping student behavior. He also mentioned that minor punishments like kneeling, picking up litter, or cutting grass within school premises could be employed. These approaches aim to make students aware of the reasons behind their misbehavior and encourage positive outcomes.

The Commissioner attributed many instances of student misbehavior to inadequate parental upbringing and urged parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s development. He noted that since the ban on corporal punishment was implemented in 2022, there has been a noticeable improvement in student discipline, with learners becoming more conscious of their actions and the associated consequences.

To further support a safe and conducive learning environment, the Lagos State Government launched the Safeguarding and Child Protection Programme in Schools in 2022, reinforcing its commitment to child safety and the adoption of non-violent disciplinary measures.
