Ladoja Set to Ascend Throne as Olubadan Dies at 90.

The ancient city of Ibadan has been thrown into mourning following the death of Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland. The revered monarch passed away in the early hours of July 7, 2025, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday. His reign, though relatively short—beginning in July 2024—was marked by wisdom and a deep commitment to the cultural heritage of the Ibadan people.

In line with the city’s well-established succession tradition, all indications now point to the emergence of former Oyo State governor, High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, as the next Olubadan. As the current Otun Olubadan—the highest-ranking chief in the civil line—Ladoja is next in line for the throne, following the rotational system between the civil and military lines of the Ibadan chieftaincy structure. With the late Olubadan coming from the military line, the civil line is due for the crown.

Preparations for Ladoja’s ascension are already taking shape. Traditional palace drummers and well-wishers have begun gathering at his Bodija residence in a clear sign of royal endorsement. Reports confirm that he has accepted the beaded crown, which was previously offered to him in 2024 but set aside due to internal disputes within the Olubadan-in-Council. This time, however, the succession process appears to be moving forward with broader consensus and public support.

Rashidi Ladoja’s journey to the throne has been as politically notable as it has been culturally significant. Born on September 25, 1944, he trained as a chemical engineer in Belgium before venturing into politics. He served as Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007, during which he experienced a turbulent administration, including an impeachment and a subsequent court-ordered reinstatement. Despite political challenges, his steady climb through the chieftaincy ranks has positioned him for this historic moment.

As Ibadan prepares for the installation of its 44th Olubadan, citizens and traditional leaders alike are looking ahead with cautious optimism. Ladoja’s expected coronation will not only mark the beginning of a new royal era but also the continuation of Ibadan’s unique and orderly leadership tradition. Formal processes, including the approval of his nomination by the Oyo State Government, are anticipated to follow shortly.
