The Federal Government has launched an investigation into the jailbreak at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State. Authorities confirmed that 12 inmates escaped during the incident, but security operatives have since recaptured nine, while efforts continue to apprehend the remaining three.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the jailbreak as “unfortunate” and directed the Acting Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, to conduct a thorough assessment. He assured the public that advanced biometric systems and technology would be used to track and recapture the fugitives.
The Kogi State Government has also expressed concern over the escape, emphasizing the need for a detailed investigation to identify any possible internal or external collaborators. Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to working with security agencies to maintain law and order.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies. The re-arrested inmates have been returned to custody, while security has been reinforced at the facility to prevent future occurrences.
