Jonathan Leads West Africa Elders Forum to Ghana for Electoral Support.

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is leading a delegation from the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) to Ghana ahead of the country’s general elections scheduled for December 7, 2024. The delegation arrived in Accra on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, to observe and support the electoral process.

Upon arrival, Jonathan commended Ghanaians for their steadfast commitment to democratic values and peaceful political transitions, noting that Ghana serves as a beacon of democracy in Africa. He emphasized that the upcoming elections present an opportunity for citizens to reaffirm their dedication to democracy, stability, and development.

The WAEF delegation includes notable figures such as former Burkinabe Prime Minister and President of the ECOWAS Commission, Kadré Désiré Ouédraogo; Executive Director of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, Ann Iyonu; and Jonathan’s Special Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze.

Jonathan urged Ghana’s Electoral Commission and security agencies to maintain independence and neutrality to ensure a credible polling process. He called on political parties, candidates, and stakeholders to respect the electoral process’s integrity and resolve disputes through lawful and constitutional channels.

Addressing the youth and party supporters, Jonathan appealed for lawful conduct during and after the elections, cautioning against acts of intimidation or violence. He highlighted that Ghana’s history of peaceful political transitions serves as a model for democratic governance across Africa.

The WAEF’s involvement underscores the importance of regional support in promoting democratic processes and stability in West Africa. Their presence aims to bolster confidence in Ghana’s electoral system and encourage a peaceful, transparent, and credible election.
