Jonathan Urges Nigerians to Name and Shame Bad Leaders for Accountability.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to actively hold their leaders accountable by publicly naming and shaming those who engage in misconduct. Speaking at the book launch of former Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, in Abuja, Jonathan emphasized that political leaders would act responsibly only when citizens begin to reject misconduct.

Jonathan proposed the creation of two buildings in Abuja to display pictures of individuals who have contributed to the country’s problems. He believes such an initiative would ensure that their descendants recognize the negative roles their forefathers played in Nigeria’s history.

In response to Jonathan’s proposal, human rights activist Omoyele Sowore argued that former leaders who have misruled should face legal consequences rather than mere public shaming. Sowore stated that what Jonathan and all the former misrulers deserve is not buildings to display their pictures to name and shame them but jail where they will rot for all they did against Nigerians.

Jonathan also criticized the deployment of military forces during elections, advocating instead for police-led security measures. He expressed concerns that involving the military in electoral processes could undermine democracy and lead to voter intimidation.

These remarks come in the context of ongoing discussions about governance and accountability in Nigeria. Jonathan’s call to action reflects a growing sentiment among citizens demanding transparency and responsibility from their leaders.
