Ijora Bridge in Lagos to Be Fully Closed from April 27 for Urgent Repairs.

The Nigerian Federal Government has announced the full closure of the Ijora Bridge in Lagos starting April 27, 2025, to carry out critical structural repairs. This bridge, which connects the Ijora Causeway to Apapa—a vital hub housing two of Nigeria’s busiest ports, Tincan Island and Apapa Port—requires comprehensive maintenance, particularly the replacement of approximately 50 worn-out bearings beneath the bridge deck  .

Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, emphasized that while the bridge is not at immediate risk of collapse, the deteriorated bearings have led to noticeable vibrations felt by drivers. The upcoming repairs mark the first major maintenance effort since the bridge’s construction several decades ago  .

To manage traffic during the closure:

• Motorists from Ijora will be diverted through the Seven Up Roundabout to reconnect to Apapa.

• Heavy goods vehicles will be rerouted via Costain and Iganmu.

The Federal Ministry of Works has assured that these diversion routes have been carefully planned to minimize disruptions. Mrs. Kesha appealed for public patience and cooperation, noting that the repairs are essential for ensuring commuter safety and preventing further structural damage .

The initial phase of the repair, involving the lifting of the bridge deck and replacement of bearings, will necessitate a complete closure. Subsequent stages, such as resurfacing, may be scheduled on Sundays to reduce traffic impact.

This closure is part of a broader initiative by the Federal Government to rehabilitate critical infrastructure across Lagos, including ongoing repairs on the Third Mainland, Carter, and Iddo bridges .
