IBB’s “A Journey In Service” Book Launch Becomes Historic Event

In an unprecedented display of unity and respect, Nigeria’s top leaders and influential personalities converged at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton for the grand launch of General Ibrahim Babangida’s autobiography, “A Journey In Service.” The event, which took place on Thursday, February 21, 2025, showcased the deep admiration and reverence that many hold for the former military president.

From early morning, guests began to arrive, eager to partake in this momentous occasion. By 8 AM, the venue was already bustling with activity, even though the ceremony was scheduled to begin at 11 AM. Security personnel had their hands full managing the crowd, which included former heads of state, ex-presidents, high-ranking military officers, and captains of industry.

Ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, who served as the event’s chairman, set the tone with his humorous and engaging opening remarks. He shared anecdotes and insights, emphasizing the significance of documenting historical events for future generations. President Bola Tinubu, the Special Guest of Honour, highlighted IBB’s impact on his political career and praised the former president for his immense influence.

The gathering saw speeches from other notable figures, including former presidents Yakubu Gowon, Abdulsalam Abubakar, Goodluck Jonathan, and Ghana’s ex-president, Nana Akufo Addo. Each speaker shared personal stories and reflections on IBB’s legacy, painting a vivid picture of his contributions to Nigeria’s development.

The highlight of the event was IBB’s heartfelt apology for the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. His admission that MKO Abiola won the election and his earnest apology moved many in the audience, bringing a sense of closure to a decades-old controversy.

Prominent business leaders, including Aliko Dangote, Abdulsamad Rabiu, Arthur Eze, and Mustafa Chike Obi, also paid tribute to IBB. Their generous donations to the IBB Presidential Library project underscored their appreciation for his role in fostering Nigeria’s private sector growth.

As the event concluded, it was clear that the launch of “A Journey In Service” was not just a book presentation, but a historic moment of reflection and reconciliation. IBB’s memoir promises to offer a unique perspective on Nigeria’s past, and the overwhelming turnout at the event is a testament to his enduring legacy.
