Ghana has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of two high-ranking government officials. Defense Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The fatal incident occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. The helicopter, a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9, was en route from Accra to Obuasi for an official function when it disappeared from radar. Authorities later confirmed that the wreckage was found with all eight people on board dead.
Also among the victims were former Agriculture Minister Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three military personnel: Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
President John Dramani Mahama has declared national mourning, with flags to be flown at half-mast. He described the tragedy as “a devastating blow” to the nation, calling the deceased “loyal patriots who gave their all in service to Ghana.”
Communications Minister Sam George urged the public to refrain from sharing graphic images and to respect the dignity of the victims and their families. Tributes continue to pour in across the country, with hashtags like #BlackWednesday and #OmaneBoamah trending.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are underway as Ghanaians grapple with the sudden loss of some of the nation’s top public servants.
