In a heartwarming visit to Lagos, Nigeria, the First Lady of the Republic of Gambia, Her Excellency Mrs. Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow, celebrated the creativity and cultural pride of African fashion. During her tour of the renowned fashion and design store, April by Kunbi, Mrs. Bah-Barrow extolled the efforts of the brand’s Creative Director, Mrs. Olakunbi Uzochukwu, for her dedication to promoting African culture and creating job opportunities for the youth.

April by Kunbi, which recently relaunched on December 8, 2024, is home to three distinct brands: Stan & Beth, a fashion line for children inspired by loyal customers seeking elegance for their little ones; Kunbi Lagos, a slow fashion ready-to-wear brand with timeless designs; and Odiuko, a luxury fabric store offering exclusive fabrics for discerning clients.

Mrs. Uzochukwu, an alumna of the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, has garnered global acclaim for her artistry, with her designs gracing brides and fashion enthusiasts worldwide. The relaunch event was attended by notable Nigerian political and business leaders, including Chief Allen Onyema, former Cross River State governor Mr. Donald Duke and his wife, Senators Ben Murray-Bruce, Daisy Danjuma, Iyabo Obasanjo, and other top dignitaries who praised the creativity behind the brand.

During her visit, Mrs. Bah-Barrow expressed her admiration for the quality and inspiration she witnessed, stating, “I prefer to dress modestly being an African, and I believe we should have our own taste before importing and integrating other cultures that are not ours. Let us maintain our culture. Human beings without culture are nothing.”

She also highlighted the importance of creating jobs for the youth, noting the numerous young people employed at the shop and factory. Mrs. Bah-Barrow emphasized the need for Africans to build their continent by themselves, especially the younger generation, and to be proud of their cultural heritage.

The First Lady’s visit underscores the significance of supporting and celebrating African creativity and entrepreneurship. Her endorsement of April by Kunbi serves as a reminder of the potential and talent within the continent, encouraging others to embrace and promote African culture.
