The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, in honor of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced this decision following the council’s meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. He stated that the proposal would be forwarded to the National Assembly for legislative approval to formalize the name change.
Established in January 1988, the University of Abuja commenced academic activities in 1990. It operates as a dual-mode institution, offering both conventional and distance learning programs.
General Yakubu Gowon served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1966 to 1975. The renaming of the university recognizes his contributions to the nation’s unity and development.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Nigerian government to honor distinguished individuals who have significantly impacted the country’s history and progress. The formal renaming will take effect following the necessary legislative procedures.
