FG Orders Removal of Speed Bumps on Major Roads Nationwide for Improved Traffic Flow.

In a decisive move to address traffic congestion across the country, the Federal Government (FG) has directed the removal of speed bumps from major roads nationwide. This decision, according to officials, aims to improve vehicular movement, reduce travel time, and enhance the efficiency of road networks. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Works and Housing following consultations with road safety and transport experts.

Minister of works David Umahi.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, emphasized the importance of this initiative in a press briefing. He noted that speed bumps on highways often lead to unnecessary bottlenecks, especially during peak travel periods. Instead of physical barriers, he proposed adopting advanced traffic management systems, such as speed cameras and increased law enforcement presence, to regulate speed without hindering movement.

While the move has received praise from motorists and transport unions, some residents and community leaders have expressed concerns. They argue that speed bumps are critical for safety in areas with high pedestrian activity. In response, the FG clarified that speed bumps in residential areas, schools, and markets would not be affected by the directive, as these areas require measures to ensure pedestrian safety.
