FG Declares Tuesday, July 15 as Public Holiday for Buhari’s Burial.

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, whose burial is scheduled to take place in Daura, Katsina State. The declaration comes as part of a broader seven-day national mourning period approved by President Bola Tinubu, during which flags are being flown at half-mast nationwide.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who said the holiday will give Nigerians an opportunity to pay their last respects to the former leader, who died in London on July 13 at the age of 82. Buhari’s body arrived in Nigeria on Sunday and is set to be interred in line with Islamic rites.

The burial will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 PM following prayers in his hometown, Daura. High-profile dignitaries including President Tinubu, state governors, and former heads of state are expected to attend. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting earlier scheduled for the same day has been postponed out of respect.

In addition to the federal holiday, the North-West Governors Forum has also declared July 15 a work-free day across seven states in the region — Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara — to honour Buhari’s memory and allow residents to participate in the mourning.
