Fasting May Continue in Nigeria as Moon Remains Unsighted — Sultan of Sokoto.

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced that fasting may continue on Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the moon signaling the end of Ramadan has not been sighted in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by NSCIA Secretary-General Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, it was noted that the new moon of Shawwal, which marks the end of Ramadan, was not sighted on Saturday, March 29, 2025. Consequently, Muslims in Nigeria are advised to complete the 30 days of fasting, with Eid-el-Fitr expected to be observed on Monday, March 31, 2025.

This practice aligns with Islamic tradition, which stipulates that if the crescent moon is not sighted on the 29th day of Ramadan, the fasting should be extended to 30 days. The NSCIA emphasized the importance of adhering to this principle to maintain uniformity and uphold the sanctity of the holy month.

Muslims across Nigeria are encouraged to use this additional day of fasting for reflection and prayer, seeking blessings for themselves and the nation. The NSCIA also urges the Muslim community to remain patient and steadfast, as the exact date of Eid-el-Fitr depends on lunar observations, which can vary by region.
