Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has cautioned against the misuse of police forces in political disputes. In a statement, Falana emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force must maintain neutrality and impartiality in political matters, as mandated by the nation’s constitution. He highlighted instances where the police have been involved in the harassment and intimidation of perceived opponents of the government, including the arrest and prosecution of individuals for criticizing political leaders .
Falana also expressed concerns about the establishment of state police, warning that without proper legal safeguards, some state governors might use them as instruments of oppression against political opponents. He stressed the importance of clearly defining the jurisdictions of state police to prevent conflicts and ensure they serve the people rather than political interests .
Furthermore, Falana condemned the government’s response to nationwide protests against hardship and bad governance, accusing officials of employing tactics to discredit legitimate grievances and suppress demonstrations. He criticized statements made by top government officials and the use of ex parte orders to restrict protest locations, emphasizing that such actions undermine democratic principles .
Falana’s remarks underscore the need for the police to focus on ensuring public safety and upholding citizens’ rights, rather than being used as tools for political repression.
