You Defend Corrupt Leaders Yet Complain About Corruption – EFCC Chairman Slams Nigerians.

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has criticized Nigerians for what he described as a contradictory stance on corruption. Speaking at a recent event, he lamented that while many citizens frequently complain about corruption, they also defend and support corrupt leaders, making the fight against financial crimes more difficult.

Olukoyede noted that public support is crucial in the battle against corruption, but instead of holding leaders accountable, some Nigerians shield politicians and public officials facing corruption allegations. He argued that this attitude weakens the EFCC’s efforts and emboldens corrupt individuals to continue looting public funds. “You cannot complain about corruption while celebrating those who engage in it,” he stated.

His remarks come amid ongoing high-profile corruption cases, with the EFCC investigating several politicians and government officials. In recent months, the commission has faced challenges, including public protests against the prosecution of certain individuals. Some of these protests, according to the EFCC chairman, are influenced by ethnic, political, or personal biases rather than a genuine commitment to justice.

Reactions to Olukoyede’s statement have been mixed. While some Nigerians agree with his stance, urging citizens to be more critical of corrupt leaders, others argue that the EFCC should focus on ensuring fair and transparent investigations. Critics have also called on the agency to avoid selective prosecution and target all corrupt individuals, regardless of their political affiliations.

As the EFCC continues its anti-corruption campaign, Olukoyede has urged Nigerians to support the agency’s work by refusing to defend or glorify corrupt figures. He emphasized that real progress in tackling financial crimes can only be achieved when the public consistently demands accountability from those in power.
