West African Leaders Gather in Lagos to Celebrate ECOWAS at 50.

Delegates from across West Africa have convened in Lagos, Nigeria, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The commemorative events are taking place at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and Eko Hotels and Suites in Victoria Island.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, serving as the current Chairman of ECOWAS, is leading the celebrations. He is joined by other heads of state, including Liberian President Joseph Boakai, and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, who delivered the welcome address.

A highlight of the occasion is the participation of General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), Nigeria’s former Head of State and the only surviving signatory of the original ECOWAS treaty. General Gowon delivered a commemorative address at Eko Hotels and Suites, reflecting on the bloc’s journey over the past five decades.

The celebrations, held under the theme “Stronger Together for a Brighter Future,” began with a symbolic reenactment of the 1975 Treaty of Lagos at the NIIA. This event honored the original signing that established ECOWAS as a regional bloc aimed at fostering economic collaboration and unity among West African nations.

In addition to the anniversary celebrations, President Tinubu is utilizing the occasion to commission several infrastructure projects in Lagos. These include the inauguration of Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road, and the flag-off of Section II of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway.

To accommodate the influx of dignitaries and ensure smooth traffic flow, the Lagos State Government has announced traffic diversions around key event venues. Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly.

The ECOWAS 50th anniversary celebrations in Lagos not only commemorate five decades of regional cooperation but also set the stage for future integration efforts aimed at enhancing economic growth and stability across West Africa.
