Davido, a leading figure in Nigeria’s Afrobeats genre, recently shared candid thoughts on the unrelenting criticism he’s faced during his illustrious career. In a revealing interview with The Breakfast Club, Davido described how opposing fans have relentlessly criticized him, often out of loyalty to other artists. The artist expressed that he believes he stands out as the most insulted and disrespected Nigerian musician in history.
Davido noted that negative comments often stem from personal biases or from individuals aiming to leverage controversies for personal gain on social media platforms like X, where monetization rewards sensationalism. He even shared a poignant anecdote about encountering one of his harshest critics and learning that their attacks were motivated solely by the desire to gain followers and earn money.
Reflecting on the toll of public backlash, Davido disclosed how difficult it is to shield his family from the vitriolic comments that flood social media. “If you see the crazy things they say. I can’t even show my wife because I know she will break down,” he revealed.
Although the artist diplomatically avoided pinpointing the origins of the attacks, it is widely perceived that fans of fellow Afrobeats stars Burna Boy and Wizkid, with whom Davido has had public disputes over the years, contribute significantly to the tension. These feuds have left many wondering whether collaborations between the famed “Big 3” artists could ever occur. Davido stated that such partnerships are “not impossible,” although he believes that the people around them often create barriers.
While Davido continues to endure the brunt of fan wars and criticism, he remains committed to his artistry and maintains hope for the future of Afrobeats collaborations.
