Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken out in defense of Spain’s rising star, Lamine Yamal, following their intense clash in the UEFA Nations League final on June 8, 2025.
Despite Yamal’s brilliant performance in the semi-finals against France, the 17-year-old failed to score in the final, leading to speculation and criticism. Ronaldo, who played a key role in Portugal’s 5-3 penalty shootout victory, urged the football world to give Yamal space to develop without unnecessary pressure.
Acknowledging Yamal’s incredible talent, Ronaldo stated that the youngster has a bright future ahead, emphasizing that he is still at the early stages of his career. “He’s a phenomenon, but we have to leave him alone,” Ronaldo remarked, predicting that Yamal will go on to win many titles, both collective and individual.
The Nations League final saw Portugal equalize through Ronaldo in the 61st minute, forcing extra time and a penalty shootout. Yamal was substituted in the second half of extra time after completing 88% of his passes and recording two shots on target.
Ronaldo also backed Spain coach Luis de la Fuente’s decision to substitute Yamal, asserting that the coach acted in the team’s best interest. “If the coach made the decision, it was because he thought it was the best thing to improve his team,” Ronaldo explained.
With Yamal already boasting two La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, a Supercopa, and a UEFA European Championship at just 17, the football world eagerly awaits his continued rise to greatness.
