Court Orders VeryDarkMan’s Arrest Amid Mercy Chinwo’s Defamation Case

The power of words is often underestimated, but Nigerian gospel artist Mercy Chinwo is proving otherwise through her legal action against popular online critic Vincent Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM). In a bold move to defend her reputation, the musician has filed a ₦1.1 billion defamation lawsuit against VDM after a series of allegations and public criticisms.

The drama began when VDM made claims about Mercy Chinwo’s involvement in alleged shady dealings with her former manager, Eeezee Tee. Despite warnings and summons, the outspoken critic continued his tirade, which escalated when he accused a judge and an EFCC official handling the case of being biased due to their connections to Chinwo.

Things took a dramatic turn when VDM failed to appear in court on March 5, 2025. On March 13, 2025, the presiding judge, Emmanuel Iyanna, issued a warrant for his arrest. Meanwhile, VDM’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, pleaded for a reconsideration, promising to ensure his client’s court appearance. Unfortunately for VDM, the court stood firm on its decision.

Social media users are divided on the case. Some believe Mercy Chinwo is well within her rights to protect her integrity, while others see the lawsuit as an overreaction. Amidst the debates, VDM has managed to keep his followers entertained by releasing a song taunting Chinwo, sparking even more discussions online.

This case highlights a critical issue in today’s digital age: the fine line between constructive criticism and defamation. It’s a stark reminder that while freedom of expression is vital, accountability for one’s words is equally essential. Whether settled in court or through other means, this case is bound to set precedents in how public figures and critics navigate disputes in the modern era.
