Court Dismisses £950tn Suit Against Atiku, Others

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a £950 trillion lawsuit filed by businessman Tunde Omosebi against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and others, calling the case “highly unreasonable”.

Justice James Omotosho struck out the case on Thursday, May 15, 2025, citing procedural irregularities and the absence of a reasonable cause of action. Omosebi initially filed the suit in June 2024, naming Hallies & Partner Ltd, Atiku Abubakar, Clifford Odibe, and Daniel Mbohok as defendants. However, by May 5, 2025, he amended the suit without court permission, increasing the number of defendants to 13.

Omosebi claimed that agents of Hallies & Partner Ltd assaulted and intimidated him at his office on July 6, 2023, violating his liberty and dignity. He demanded £950 trillion in compensation, along with £95 trillion in exemplary damages and a public apology in national and international media outlets in perpetuity.

Justice Omotosho criticized the procedural flaws, stating that courts must preserve judicial time and resources by filtering out frivolous cases. He also revealed that Omosebi had filed a separate lawsuit against CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso, seeking £990 trillion in damages, with a ruling scheduled for June 4, 2025.

The judge used the occasion to caution legal professionals, urging the Nigerian Bar Association to discourage baseless lawsuits.
