Cooking Gas Price Surges by 44.5% in One Year, NBS Report Shows

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed a significant year-on-year increase in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, across Nigeria. According to the agency’s July 2025 LPG Price Watch, the average cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder rose by 44.51%—from ₦14,261.57 in July 2024 to ₦20,609.48 in July 2025.

While the report noted a slight month-on-month decrease of 1.91% from ₦21,010.56 in June 2025, the annual spike reflects broader inflationary pressures and supply chain challenges affecting energy costs nationwide. States such as Imo, Delta, and Rivers recorded the highest average prices, while Kebbi, Nasarawa, and Kwara offered the lowest rates during the review period.

The surge in cooking gas prices has sparked concern among households and small businesses, many of whom rely on LPG for daily cooking and operations. Analysts attribute the increase to factors including currency depreciation, rising transportation costs, and limited domestic production capacity. Despite a federal ban on LPG exports introduced in late 2024 to stabilize local supply, prices have continued to climb, placing additional strain on consumers.

The NBS findings underscore the urgent need for policy interventions to improve affordability and access to clean energy. As Nigeria pushes for wider adoption of LPG to reduce reliance on biomass and kerosene, ensuring price stability remains a critical challenge.
