The Confederation of African Football (CAF) delivered its verdict on October 26 regarding the airport incident involving Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Libya.
The unfortunate incident, which left the Super Eagles stranded at Al-Abraq airport for more than 20 hours, resulted in the Nigerian team forfeiting their originally scheduled Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match.
In response to the distressing situation, CAF issued a statement condemning the incident and set up a disciplinary committee to investigate further.
The football governing body later issued a statement announcing substantial sanctions against the Libyan federation. As reported by Libya Akhbar, CAF has decided to lift the three-match home ban initially placed on the Libyan national team, permitting them to host their upcoming games with home fans in attendance.
The decision was reversed following the intervention of Libya’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdel Hadi Al-Huwaij. Notably, CAF had earlier awarded three points and three goals to the Super Eagles, in addition to imposing a $50,000 fine on the Libyan team.
With these recent rulings, both teams are set to resume their qualification campaigns: Nigeria will travel to the Republic of Benin, while Libya heads to Kigali to take on Rwanda.
