The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Committee has awarded Nigeria’s Super Eagles three points and three goals in their abandoned 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya, originally set for October 15 in Benina.
In a ruling issued Saturday and signed by Chairman Ousmane Kane, the Disciplinary Board found the Libyan Football Federation in violation of Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations, along with Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
“The Libyan Football Federation is deemed to have breached Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations, as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
“The match No. 87, Libya vs Nigeria, of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025 (scheduled for October 15, 2024, in Benghazi), is declared lost by forfeit by Libya, with a recorded score of 3-0,” the ruling partially states.
The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) was fined $50,000, payable within 60 days. With the awarded points, the Super Eagles now have 10 points, leading Benin by four and Rwanda by five, while Libya sits last with one point and is out of qualification.
A win or draw against Benin in Abidjan on November 14 will secure Nigeria’s spot in the finals in Morocco, set for December 2025 to January 2026. The Nigerian team had previously boycotted the Libya match due to safety concerns after being stranded at Al-Abraq airport for over 22 hours. The LFF claimed Nigeria had not cooperated on travel arrangements and alleged similar treatment for its team in Nigeria during the earlier fixture.
This decision places Nigeria close to qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with two games remaining.
