In a powerful affirmation of integrity and professionalism, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Sentome Obi has been officially promoted and honoured as Nigeria’s Police Officer of the Year 2024. Obi made national headlines after refusing a $17,000 bribe intended to derail a sensitive financial and cybercrime investigation.
The promotion ceremony, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, was led by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, who decorated Obi alongside ACP Aliyu Shaba, the 2023 award recipient. Obi’s elevation to Chief Superintendent follows a rigorous selection process grounded in merit, courage, and ethical conduct2.
Obi, who heads the Financial and Cybercrime Unit at Zone 16 Command in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, was also celebrated by Governor Douye Diri with a state banquet, a brand-new car, and a fully furnished three-bedroom bungalow. The IGP praised the gesture as a landmark moment in institutionalizing integrity within Nigeria’s security architecture.
“This is not just a promotion—it’s a legacy,” said IGP Egbetokun. “We are honouring officers who remind the nation what true service looks like. Let every officer take note: this is the standard”.
The Nigeria Police Force has pledged to continue rewarding excellence and reforming its ranks through transparency, discipline, and merit-based advancement.
