In a remarkable display of talent and resilience, Aftahana Dahiru Sarina, a physically challenged photographer, was honored with the “Photographer of the Year” award at the 3rd Arewa Under 30 Awards. The event, held at Tahir Guest Palace in Kano, was organized by Arewa Agenda in collaboration with Daily Nigerian. This prestigious award ceremony aims to recognize and celebrate young talents across northern Nigeria who have excelled in various fields.
Aftahana’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Despite facing significant physical challenges, he has consistently demonstrated his ability to tell compelling stories through his camera lens. His dedication and passion for photography have not only earned him this award but also serve as a beacon of hope for others with disabilities. In his acceptance speech, Aftahana expressed his gratitude to his supporters and dedicated the award to all individuals with disabilities striving to make a difference. He emphasized that “our abilities matter more than our disabilities” and hoped his journey would inspire others to pursue their passions, regardless of the obstacles.
The selection process for the awards was highly competitive, with 457 nominations received from across the 19 northern states. The nominees represented a diverse range of demographics, including secondary school students, university undergraduates, career professionals, and social entrepreneurs. The panel of judges, comprising professionals from various fields, meticulously evaluated the nominees based on their drive and impact.
Other notable awardees included Umar Audu for investigative journalism, Lawan Bukar Maigana for humanitarian efforts, and Saidu Abdurrahman for achieving a Guinness World Record in photography. Honorary awards were also presented to individuals and organizations for their contributions to youth development, health impact, and excellence in service.
