Tomeka Thiam, the long-time wife of Senegalese-American singer Akon, has officially filed for divorce just days before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary. The couple, who married in 1996, are parting ways due to what court documents describe as irreconcilable differences.
The filing reveals that the pair share a 17-year-old daughter, Journey. Thiam is requesting joint legal custody but sole physical custody of their daughter. She is also seeking spousal support while asking the court to deny any such claims from Akon.
The divorce marks the end of one of the music industry’s longest-lasting marriages, as the Grammy-nominated star and his wife prepare to go their separate ways after nearly three decades together.
