19.2 Million Nigerians Now Insured – NHIA.

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced that 19.2 million Nigerians are now enrolled in health insurance schemes, surpassing its 2024 target and achieving 95% of the 2027 presidential goal.

Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, Director-General of the NHIA, highlighted this milestone during a Universal Health Coverage Day commemoration in Abuja. He attributed the success to strategic policy reforms, effective collaborations with stakeholders, and a commitment to universal health coverage.

The NHIA has expanded the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) and partnered with state health insurance agencies to provide affordable and accessible healthcare, especially for vulnerable populations.

Despite this progress, challenges remain, including funding limitations, infrastructure deficits, and inadequate human resources. The NHIA plans to scale up digital enrollment processes and integrate informal sector workers into the insurance scheme to address these issues.

This achievement reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare as outlined in the National Health Act.
